::EOU: Winter Wonder What The ?!::

In case you haven’t heard, Europe has be blanketed with snow.  Dozens and dozens of feet of snow covered the country, including Rome, which received it’s largest snow in 27 years.

This amount of snow is very dangerous, however, I cannot help but be mesmerized by the images of frozen water, from the Black Sea to fountains to gargoyles, water in motion froze, and created unbelievable shapes.

Frozen waves of the Black Sea.

This is what a frozen wave looks like!  I have never seen anything like this!

Walking on the waves!

Yes, that’s a lighthouse, surrounded by crashing waves.

Bubbling fountain, no more.

So cool!

This is my favorite picture!

These images are beautiful (thank you Mother Nature) but more so, I hope to continue to hear that everyone is ok, and Europe is getting back to normal.

::EOU: Come Together::

Recently, an awesome Wilmington musician, Adrian Varnam, and his housemates fell victims to a house fire.  No one was injured, which is most important and a miracle, but many of their lives’ precious possessions weren’t as lucky.

When hearing of this tragedy, there was concern for the state of Adrian’s violin and guitar, which amazingly, he had with him at the time of the fire.

Music was saved.

Billy, from one of our favorite restaurants, Manna, has worked together to get a music fest together to raise money for Adrian and his friends.

But Adrian said no.

Instead, the Music Festival will benefit the Cape Fear Red Cross.  Adrian, who lost many irreplaceable items, passed on receiving help in order to help others.

Music is going to help save others.

Please come out on Saturday, February 25th, starting a noon, and lasting all afternoon- at the 5 Star Tavern on Second and Princess.  If you’re a musician, bring your music, and entertain the crowd.  It’s free, but all donations will go the the Cape Fear Red Cross.

Here’s to Adrian, and a giving, caring spirit!

Come together.

::EOU: DIY: Light Smells::

I’m having a party this weekend, and looking for easy- and I mean EASY- inexpensive, cool things to do to make it special, without being pretentious.

Let me introduce you to the Citrus Peel Candle.

Trust me, this is like one of those 1980′s aerobics videos- High Results and Low Impact (to your busy day and wallet).

What you’ll need:

Citrus fruits, in this demonstration they used Satsuma Oranges, but I’m convinced it could work with any citrus fruit.
Olive or Vegetable Oil
Spoon
Matches

The stem side of the Satsuma will be the bottom and base of the candle. Lightly score a ring around the top 1/3 portion of the orange. Peel off the top.

Because Satsumas are known for their loosely attached peels, the orange should easily be removed. Gently separate the orange from of the peel with the help of a spoon. Slowly work the spoon towards the bottom and pry the orange out from the sides, making sure not to break through the middle.

Once the flesh of the orange is taken out, the pith connecting the outer stem should remain. The pith will be the wick of the candle. Snip the outer stem off with a pair of scissors so the candle can sit flat.

***Pith= that weird piece of white nastyness that runs from end to end inside the orange.  This is the thing you throw out when you eat a peeled orange.

Pour a few glugs of olive oil into the orange, leaving just the very tip of the pith exposed. Use the spoon to submerge the top of the pith into the oil for just a few seconds. It’s now ready to be lit!

*** Tip: if you’re having trouble lighting the pith, it’s probably because it has too much moisture. Try letting the peel dry overnight (without oil) and don’t forget to submerge the tip into oil for a few seconds before lighting.

Depending on the length of the pith, the candle should burn for at least a couple of hours. Remember, never leave candles unattended while burning!

Blam!

Totally doing this one!  Except, I’m going to try it with oranges, lemons, and limes, and use them outside and inside to make a delicious smell and “mood lighting”!

LOVE THIS!

::EOU: In Meow-mory::

This week, my size of the Motor Man by Jeffrey Campbell sold out in our store before I was able to purchase them.  Sad times.

We’ve all experienced this tragedy.  You pass on making a purchase until a later day and then you miss out.  Don’t wait.  Let your awesome items know you love them by taking them home as quickly as you can.

Therefore, in “meow-mory”, please take a moment to see some of my favorite leopard print dude clothes, and one picture of Bon Iver with his kitty.

If you wear a 43, sorry, join the club, all other sizes can be enjoyed/cherished/loved here.

Gone but not forgotten, Motor Man Size 43.  December 2011-February 2012.  Survived by the Dust-Man brothers, American Flag and Tribal Pattern, and rugged cousin, Brit. We love you.
