As you may have heard, hospitals and other healthcare organizations are now asking for hand-made face masks, as a last resort due to the lack of available supplies. We are lucky to know a number of professional makers who are stepping up to crank out as many of these masks as possible. We want to support those makers by helping offset the cost of materials for the masks - including elastic, fabric, and shipping costs.
Edge of Urge and Craft Habit BOTH have received inquiries from our makers and community supporters. All are looking for ways to help create some GOOD out of this really terrible situation. We strongly believe there is power in numbers and the answer was clear...JOIN FORCES! We rallied a team and are ready to take this on!
You can help by buying a Mask Maker Gift Card. All the money from these gift cards will be used to buy & ship supplies to the professional makers in our network. If for some reason this project shuts down due to a national quarantine, or an increase in mass manufacturing, all donors will be offered a choice of a complete refund, or to let Edge of Urge send their donation to a local charity providing relief for people affected by all aspects of the coronavirus crisis.
We are moving fast, too, and have already been able to purchase the elastic needed to sew up to 20,000 masks. Yes, twenty thousand. These masks have been pledged to UNC Hospitals and other local hospitals, and will be produced & delivered over the course of the next few weeks.
On top of that, we have extra materials and elastic now to send out into the community. Haus Page has created kits of materials that are pre-cut, and ready to be sewn into masks. Each kit has supplies for 25 masks, as well as sewing instructions, and a mailer for sending the finished masks to the healthcare organization of your choice.
For those interested in sewing masks:
If you are making masks and don't know where to send them, please go to WeNeedMasks.org. This is a site created & run by the American Sewing Guild. They are doing the work to connect healthcare facilities in need of masks with volunteers to sew. Follow the link Locations Needing Masks and scroll down to NC. They are updating the growing list as fast as they can.
We are still collecting donations via purchase of these gift cards. All funds collected will be used to keep making masks, and support other groups in the community that are producing PPE for healthcare workers.
