Sweet grass (Hierchole odarata) is one of the most sacred herbs, sometimes known as 'holy grass' or 'the hair of Mother earth'. Separately each strand is not as strong as the strands are when braided together. It is used to bring positive, healing energy through smudging. Smudging is a ritual to cleanse a place, person or object of negative energy. It involves the burning of special sacred plants and passing an object through the smoke, or fanning smoke around a person or place. The spirit of the plant purifies whatever is being smudged.
