Who We Are

At Edge of Urge, we follow our curiosity wherever it leads—usually straight to incredible makers with stories to tell. Our shelves are filled with thoughtfully chosen, artfully made, can’t-find-anywhere-else goods from independent designers near and far.

Clothing, jewelry, objects, art, home goods, and gifts that feel like you actually found them. Things you didn’t know you needed until you saw them. Things that stick.

And yes, that includes our kids collection which is really damn good. Not an afterthought, not overly precious...just the same level of care, creativity, and personality found in the rest of our shop, scaled down for the tiniest humans in your orbit.

When you visit us (in-person or virtually) you're not just shopping. You're seeking a little mood shift, a little hit of inspiration, a little treasure hunt. So happy hunting.

2002

In 2002, Jessie Williams packed up her life in Chicago and landed in Wilmington, North Carolina with a gut feeling and not much else. She opened Edge of Urge in a 400-square-foot space that was, objectively, more closet than store…and started selling handmade pieces, created by either her or her friends.

2014

From the beginning, it was never just about selling things. It was about creating space—for new designers, for big ideas, for people figuring it out as they go. A place where emerging artists could land before the algorithms found them. A place built on risk, relationships, and a lot of instinct. And it turns out, people resonate with that.

After fostering a constantly evolving shop in Wilmington for nearly 12 years, it was time for more. Jessie moved to Raleigh and opened a second Edge of Urge location to spread the good word of supporting local makers.

2026

With locations in Wilmington and Raleigh, plus our sibling concept Unlikely Professionals, we’re still showing up for the makers, the misfits, and the ones doing things their own way.

And maybe the coolest part? We’ve been around long enough that some of our original shoppers…who first walked in as kids or teenagers…are now grown, coming back through the doors as adults… some with kids of their own. Full circle in the best, most surreal way.
